Crops should be monitored in two ways:

  • Look for further crop damage
  • Look for integral pellets in the field

Firescale makes monitoring easy in the field:

  • The pellet is a very distinctive vivid blue colour
  • The pellet remains vivid blue for more than 2 weeks on the soil surface, bleaching is not seen

If you see further crop damage or the pellets are not visible on the soil surface, then you must reapply Firescale

A slug will return to a partially eaten pellet

Reapplication is more likely where crops are under severe pressure from high slug numbers, including high numbers of eggs that are hatching over a long period

Very wet previous seasons and mild winters, followed by warmer soil temperatures will increase the rate of egg hatching
